Salle Lawrence Inter-school Epee Cup Autumn ‘09
Compton C.E, Chaddlewood and Goosewell Primary School Children!

This is the second time this cup has been fought for, the first  was at the end of the Spring term  earlier this year. Again three Plymouth school s were fighting for the cup : Compton C..E Primary School, Goosewell Primary School and Chaddlewod Primary School.

Rhiannon Lawrence has been teaching in the schools over the Autumn term and what  better way to end the term  than with a  friendly inter-school team match. She ran intra-school competitions over the last few sessions of term to find the best 4 fencers from each school to join together to form a team that would represent their school  in a team match just before Christmas.

Comptons team included Patrick, Oliver, Charlotte and Hannah. Chaddlewoods team were Rory, Jack, James and Chris and Goosewells team were Jordan, Harrison, Charlie and Amelia.

All the teams had to fence against each other in a relay style event  where the score from the previous fight  was carried forward to the next one  until one of the teams reached 27 hits. All the children tried really hard and supported each other but in the end one team had to win.

Congratulations to Compton who retained their title and won the cup with Goosewell in second place and Chaddlewood in third. All children received medals for their respective placing's presented by Salle Lawrence Fencing Club’s young superstar and role model  Toni Denham who has just secured a place in the GB team at the Under 17 Womens European Epee Championships to be held in Athens in March 2010.

Rhiannon says “it was great to see the children compete as a team in  what is normally considered to be an individual sport. There were some first class performances from  fencers at each of the schools which impressed the many parents, teachers and Salle Lawrence Fencing Club  assistants. I am already looking forward to the re-match in April  at the end of the Spring term  in 2010.”

A big thank you to Goosewell Primary School for being wonderful hosts even providing biscuits and drinks for everyone,  to Salle Lawrence Fencing Club for providing assistants to help the competition run swimmingly and to Toni Denham  our medal and cup presenter.
